  1. The Penal Times
    Any story about the penal times that pertains t this district.
    As priests being pursued by English soldiers.
    About the year 1709 the penal times began. The English soldiers had a great hatred for Christianity and they did everything they could to kill the priests. If anybody brought a priest’s head to the British soldiers they would get a five pound note.
    There is a rock in John Burke’s field and it is called ‘Carraig an Aifrinn’. The priests of this district were afraid to say Mass in the church so it was on the rock the most of them used to say Mass.
    The field in which that rock is situated, is in the village of Cluide, Corrandulla, co. Galway
