  2. There was once a wood ranger and he lived in a wood, and he used to protect game there. He had a nice little house, and he had two dogs also. One night he came in and he was very tired. He sat down by the fire and took off his shoes and smoked his pipe. He felt one of his shoes on each hob and his pipes on the stool beside the fire.
    He had an old bed beside the fire and he lay down on it. Soon after he looked out and to his great surprise what did he see sitting at the fire but a fox and he smoking his pipe. He put his fingers
