- 1. If a black coal falls up in the hearth, there is a man coming to the house. If a red coal falls up it is a woman that will come in.
2. It was an old custom with the people long ago not to rake the fire if there was anyone if there was anyone of the family out. The last person that goes to bed is the one that rakes the fire.

- 1. It was the custom not to let any fire out of the house on the first of May.
2. No ashes should be let out on the first Monday of the New Year.
3. Not to let out any fire when a person would be churning.
4. When the children are stirring the pot hanger the old people stop them, as they say that they are washing the devil's shirt.
