  1. On St Stephens day the boys go to hunt the wren. When they kill the wren they hang him on a holly bush. That night they go from house to house singing, dancing and saying rhymes.
    When they enter a house they say
    The wren, the wren, the king of all birds
    On St Stephens day he was caught in the furze
    She dipped her wing in a barrel of beer.
    A happy Christmas and a merry New Year
    Up with the kettle and down with the pan
    A shilling or two will bury the wren.
    Shrove Tuesday is a great day for pancakes and in Lusk. Long ago there used to be a great wrestling match and they would come from all parts to see it and the prizes they got were a football and a lot of fancy garters and the boys would give them to their best girls and they would want the honour of putting the garter on the girls leg.
    On November Night we have nuts and apples and we hang an apple from the ceiling to see who would get the first bite of it. We
