    Old Crafts - Thatching
    (Skerries, Co. Dublin)
    There are not many thatchers in Skerries at present. When the thatcher is beginning his work he leaves the straw ready a couple of days before.
    He throws water on the straw to keep it down on the roof. He then rakes all the loose thatching off the house. Next day he ties the straw into little bundles called "swads." He then gets a pointed implement called a "slice" and makes a hole he shoves the "swad" as tightly as possible. He continues this till he has the whole roof finished
