  1. In the Penal times there were no schools in Ireland only hedge schools and the people found it difficult to be educated.
    The ehdge schools were held in Clooncastle and in Cloonearneen in the year 1838 when the people were not allowed to go to school.
    Ned Slevin was the hedge school master. He taught his pupils how to read, write and spell in their own houses. Ned Sleven was a native of the place but when away from home the people kept him in their houses and in this way paid him.
    After some time Sleven went to America and became a ploughman for Parnell's mother.
