Near Clonglowla is a place called Maiden Hill, where Horse Racing was held about 100 years ago. They were the principal Races in Connaught. Its size was about 300 acres.

George Ruthledge (Landlord) owned it. He was a notorious gambler and when he had spent all his money he put up his entire farm as a stake. An Englishman won it. He sold it by Auction. Courtney Kenny bought it.
A Racehorse named White Stockings is buried on top of the hill. He had won several races at various meetings and when he was too old to run the owner brought him for show. When this horse saw the others running he broke away, and killed himself.
