    (2) An itch in the ankle is a sign of a surprise.
    (3) If your right ear is hot somebody is speaking ill of you.
    (4) If your left ear is hot someone is speaking well of you.
    (5) When sparks fly out of the fire, you should spit in order to get money.
    (6) If a coal falls from the fire someone is coming. The sooner you put it up the sooner they will come :-
    "Sooner up, sooner in".
    If you spit in the coal they will not come.
    (7) If you cry on New Year's day you will cry every day during the year.
    (8) The ghosts dance in the whin bushes in New Year's night. They jump very high because every time they alight they prick their feet.
    (9) The ghosts are supposed to haunt the ditches in the "[?]" in New Year's night.
    (10) The moaning of a man who committed suicide by cutting his throat can be heard in [?] on Christmas night.
