Flax was grown here long ago in large quantities.
It was squitched at home by beating it on a kind of board or stand made for the purpose. When beaten sufficiently on this board the squitcher rubbed his hand along the handful of flax in his hand so as to remove all the broken shells left after the beating. It was then tied in small sheaves by twisting strands of the flax round it. It was so well tied that no matter how many times it was moved about it would never loosed. It was then spun on the spinning wheels.
