- I went into my neighbour's house and asked the old woman had she any weather lore. Her name is Mrs. Lowry, aged about sixty. This is what she told me:
If there is a blue blaze in the fire it is a sign of rain.
When wild geese fly over the country it is a sign of storms.
If you see dust rising off the road it is a sign of rain.
When you see the robins and other birds sitting on the trees it is a sign of rain.
When you see the trawlers going up rivers for shelter it is a sign of storm.
When you see the smoke going up straight it is a sign of good weather.
When you see the smoke going up crooked it is a sign of rain.
When the soot falls it is a sign of rain.
When the crows build their nests near the tops of the trees it is a sign of good weather.
When steam rises out of the turf it is a sign of frost.- Collector
