- (continued from previous page)(Holy Saturday), the people go to mass. The priest blesses a certain amount of holy water, which is called "Easter water". One of each household takes a bottle, to procure some which is used for blessing the house. This "Easter water" has to be used at once, as there is no salt put in it to keep it fresh. The priest also blesses a bucketful of turf coals. Each person takes one with him, and it is used in lighting the fire on the following morning.
May-eve has a very fine old custom which is still practiced in this locality. This custom is the erection of a Maypole. When the children come from school on 30th April, they proceed, to hill, dale, glen and vale, to pluck wild flowers. When they have enough plucked, they return home. Their task then is to get a suitable pole. The flowers, which are of various hues, are attached to the pole, the latter being set up in a conspicuous place in front of the house, This, then, is the Maypole, which is set up as an offering to Our Lady on her Feastday.
