- The hush of evening wraps the braes;
The sunsets roses strain the west,
And, glimmering through pearly haze,
The dusky hills loom, purple-drest.
With sunset's glow gilding its breast,
Slieve-Snaught stands brooding, dim and lone;-
A sentinel o'er all rest, -
The loftiest peak in Inishowen.Far off you loom through evening's haze -
I wonder, here in twilight dim,
How many million nights and days
You've mused on that horizon's rim,
Like a huge buddha, mute and grim?
Empires you have seen rise and fall!
Now robins chant their evenin' hymn
O'er vanished cities you recall"The hoary cairn upon your crest
Is first by morning sunlight kissed,
And, down your wind-swept heathery brest,
Young, laughing streams career and twist.
And, through the clinging evening mist,
Across your slopes the curlews call,
'Neath skies of rose and amethyst,
