  1. There are four forges in the district of Carndonagh. There are two on the Moville Road, one on the New Road, and one on the Malin Road. They are all near rivers, because water is necessary for contracting the hot iron. The roofs of the forges are black and a number of the doors are black also. There is only one fire-place in each of these forges.
    The smith has many implements. He uses an anvil, hammer, tongs, nails, and iron. The smith makes very useful articles such as ploughs, harrows, horse-shoes, and grubbers.

    There is a story told of a smith who made a brooch for Our Lady. One day the Holy Family went by a wind-swept road. Our Lady lost the pin of her cloak which she had wrapped round the Holy Infant.
