- One night, about one hundred years ago, a man named John Mc Laughlin of Ballynaboe in the parish of Culduff County Donegal, was coming home from a fair when a crowd of fairies on horseback overtook him. One of their horses was riderless and one of the fairies called out "Who will ride this horse?" Another of the fairies answered "Who but John McLaughlin?" and with that John was hoisted up on horseback and away across the fields over hedges and ditches they galloped. John was so pleased with the ride that he began to praise the horses but he had no sooner spoken than the horse suddenly disappeared and he was left riding on a broomstick.
