- In the Penal Days the people had no tea except at Christmas. Every day they ate potatoes and buttermilk. They went to their work very early, but they did not get their breakfast till nine o' clock. They got no other meal after that till they came back in the evening. Those who were able to buy meal got some mixed with water and sugar, but those who could not buy any got potatoes and buttermilk again.Bread
