- This strongly fortified fort which is occupied by English soldiers was built over 125 years ago. On the shores of Lough Swilly the English were scared that Napoleon would invade Ireland. These forts were called Martello towers. For the last fifty years or so there were E. soldiers in none of them only Dunree & Leenan on the English Bank of Lough Swilly. During the European war the Search lights from these forts used search the Lough for the U-boats.
At the time of the Pro-treaty civil war the "Irregulars" occupied the old Fort at Inch Island. It has not been used since.
There is a rocky path round the cliffs at Dunree Fort called the Mad-man's path. A lady made a bet that she could ride round it on horseback and she won.
Dunree Lighthouse is in the Fort grounds. There used to be an old Fort at Dunree, and there was a draw-bridge there which was at the west side of Dunree pier, and every(continues on next page)
