- My townland - Leophin
17-1-38 In the townland of Leophin there are about sixty people altogether, now in this year 1938 and about fourteen families, and the majority of them are called Mc Laughlin, and the religion of all is Catholic. Mary Duffy, Neill Duffy, James Mc Laughlin, Mary O'Hagan are over seventy years of age. Leophin got its name from St. Finnian, and on the side of Leophin hill there is a big stone called Finn's stone.
This parish of Desertegney was a desert or quiet place when St. Egney came to it; and therefore it was called Desertegney. Three houses in this townland are in ruins, because the people that lived in them are dead, all except one man, and he is living in the home of his sister. One family from this townland emigrated to 'America', but came back again later.
From the townland of Leophin nine children go to school now. Half of Leophin land is moorland, and the other half is good land. There is a Mass rock in Leophin, where Mass was said in the Penal days. A part of Leophin is(continues on next page)
