“Long ago some people kept game cocks, and these were put to fight in certain places.”

Long ago some people kept game cocks, and these were put to fight in certain places. "Cockfighting" was carried on just as greyhound racing is at present. The district called Cockhill which is about a mile and a half from Buncrana was a favourite place for this pastime, and this is why this district is so called.
The cocks were taken to the place and the two were put to fight.
They had pits in which these cocks would fight least the police would see them as it was illegal
These cocks had no cobs, as they were cut off with a razor where, when they were small.
Each one of these had steel spurs on his feet, and with these he fought.
There were bookies or bookmakers there, and the people put on money on these cocks just the same as they do nowadays on the greyhounds or the horse.
These cocks would fight each other till they would die or till one would win or perhaps kill the other.(continues on next page)
