    In her father's house long ago there was an old grandfather clock ticking away in the corner. The kitchen floor was earthen and uneven. A long white table was placed along the wall, and was kept clean by frequent scrubbing.
    On the same side near the fire was what was called an off-shot bed. When closed up it would have passed for a press. On the other side of the kitchen stood an old settle bed. This was a kind of sofa by day and a bed by night. There was one room and it had an earthen
