  1. There were no hedge schools in my mother or father's time.
    The school my mother went to was St. Johnstone. It was on the side of the road. They were taught indoors. Miss Casey and Mr. Ward were the teachers. They were not strangers. The school was not carried on in farmer's houses. The teachers lodged in houses. They were paid just as they are paid now. Irish was not taught. The books they used are just the same now. The writing was done with pencil. There was a blackboard. Miss Casey is still there but Mr. Ward is not.
