A little boy stood by the turn
He was trying to keep from crying
    Just straining every nerver
He held out his cap for a penny
And you could hear him say
All I want is a penny sir
I'll pay you back some day.

The boy said "please dont arrest me
I'll tell you my story in song"

So that's why I had to leave home sir
And never see mother no more
