  1. My grandfather whose name was William Dougal Clarke owned a scutch mill which was situated in the townland of Carricknamart in Manorcunningham district in County Donegal.
There was a great big dam to hold the water. The water came out by means of a sluice, there were throws which the water ran down to the water wheel.
There was a handle on the sluice to turn the water on and off at will.
The water ran into things called buckets. The weight of the water turned the wheel.
The water wheel and the cog wheel were on the one axle, the cog wheel was in the inside and the water wheel was on the outside.
