- Once upon a time there were two Irishmen went to Scotland to the harvest. They stayed and worked at the harvest until each of them earned ten pounds. When they were ready to come home they thought it hard to break the money on expences. So they began to study a plan how to bring home the money in full. At last Mickey told Patrick about a monkey that was in a shop in Scotland. He said “if you give me your money I will beat [?] him twenty pounds that he is Paddy Duffy all the road from Ireland, and we will leave it to the first man that com [?] comes in Be you sure to be the first man in”Mickey went into the shop and bought an ounce of tobacco. When he got the tobacco he ran over to the other side of the counter and said, “How are you Paddy Duffy all the road from Ireland” an the monkey did not speak to him. He said to him again “Many as the day I did help you on with the bag of potatoes in Ireland and now you would not help speak [?] to an old neighbour [sic]” At the end up the shopkeeper asked him “how much would he beat that(continues on next page)
