  1. Our district is remarkable for the number of Scotch words and phrases in common use.
    In connection with farming we have several:-
    A cowshed is always called a byre.
    A fork for manure is referred to as a "graip".
    A two-year old bullock is called a "stirk".
    A furrow is always a "furr" or an "alley."
    A child is referred to as a "wain".
    When boys reach the age of 7 or 8 they are called "caudies." A girl of that age is called a "cutty."
    A young man of 16 - 20 yrs is called a stócach. A girl of the same age is a lassie.
