During the land troubles in Ireland the Irish poets were busy writing home.

    (continued from previous page)
    old Ireland.
    II
It told how the widow could not pay her way
Then came the agent one dark dreary day
To burn down the cabin for the trifle that she owed
And she and her children were cast on the road.
Though she'd a son far afloat on the foam
Another a soldier yet both far from home
Carrying their colours against the dusky foam
While she and her children were starving at home
    Chorus
As the tears rolled down his sunburnt cheeks
Dropped a letter he held in his hand
Its true too true, more trouble in old Ireland
