“Did you see a boat landing?” asked the police.
    “I did” answered Browne.
“Did you see men leave the boat”? asked the police.
    They were answered similarly.
“Did any other person see them”? was his next question.
“Indeed there did.” said Browne. “me aul muilin cow was up there watching like myself.”
Taking him for a simpleton the police departed. Leitrim was well assisted in his tyranny by his agents. We are told that only for them he would not have been such a tyrant. These agents were appointed from the common people and made full use of their authority. Two were appointed from Between-the-Waters. Alcorn and Moore and no bigger devils ever walked on Irish soil. The accompanied the tyrant in his visits to this district and of course could supply him with all information.
His Mulroy agent Matthew Stewart met with an untimely fate. Accompanied by his son he took a boat loadening of wrack from Rye Island. He anchored off Mulroy pier where a strong current runs. The boat, being top-heavy, on swinging round capsized. The boy was saved and Stewart though a powerful swimmer was drowned. According to the boy’s story he saw his father held underneath by a big black man.
