- (continued from previous page)It is said that the water of St. Garvan's Well is believed to cure exiles of home-sickness.Another Holy Well is situated near Ray, in this parish and its water is used as a cure for sore eyes.
Another story told about Tobar Pádraig relates that before Burns closed the Well he made use of the water to boil a pot of potatoes but that after keeping the potatoes in the fire for several hours they refused to boil.
- Men of Strength - One man in this district was exceptionally strong and hardy. His name was Thomas Whoriskey and he resided in a little cabin a short distance to the North of this School in the neighbouring townland of Elly. Thomas died in the year 1916. His most remarkable feat of strength was his carrying on his back all the way from Elly to Ranelton a bag of oats which weighed sixteen stones. This was performed when he was in the full vigour of his young manhood and the distance from his home to Ranelton was approximately thirteen miles. In his old age he caried on his back from the house of Michael Friel Oughterlin (Michael Friel is still alive) to his own home in Elly a bag of meal weighing sixteen stones. The distance was approximately 1 1/2 mile and the road rough, steep and uneven. On another occasion a cow(continues on next page)
