    Landlords of the district :- the Mortimers who resided in County Down were the Landlords of Oughterlin. There is a tradition that in the days of the United Irishmen some men from this district went to the Landlord’s residence in Down and murdered the Landlord, and that the murderers were never brought to justice.
    About one hundred years ago another Mortimer, also Landlord of Oughterlin, was on very friendly terms with a small farmer named Diver who owned a small farm in Ballylar (portion of the townland of Lurganboy in which the school is situated). This Mortimer was one day hunting on the Oughterlin mountain and was accompanied by Diver to whom he gave a lease of all of the land of Ballylar for five pounds a year forever. Diver was that very evening advised by his relatives to have no such Lease from the Landlord and he immediately left for Rathmulllan and gave back the lease to Mortimer as he was leaving the village by boat to Fahan. Had Diver kept the Lease he could have collected sixteen pounds of rent annually from the farmers of Ballylar which he could himself have pocketed as the total rent of that portion of the townland of Lurganboy amounted to Twenty one pounds per year.
