Which soon did wreck our gallant ship
    The sea became our graves.
One man out of four hundred all danger did withstand
He swam alive unto the shore and died upon dry land.

In august 1842 some men from Ballywhoriskey Fanad , were going to the English harvest. They were in a boat off Leathardán intending to go to Fahan and to walk from thence to Derry. It was a very windy day, sixteen men were on board the frail craft. They were all drowned with the exception of one man who held onto the boat.
Ballad singing had reached the height of its badly deserved popularity about this time and this drowning formed a lucrative theme:-
“It was on the eighth of August
    Eighteen and forty two
    When to the English harvest
    They left to bid adieu
    The boat was overloaded
And the wind blew too severe
There are fifteen of our fanad boys
Sunk down to rise no more”
