ago. A man who had spent a number of years working in Scotland returned here. He was met by an ex-teacher who addressed him in Irish. The exile answered in English. "Do you forget the native tongue?" asked the ex-teacher. "No" answered the exile. "Nor do I forget the times you punished me for speaking the native tongue." Any child who was heard speaking the Irish language was punished.
In this regard I might add the two Irish speaking families to which I have already referred are not natives of this district and consequently they could give me no information of a local character.
I therefore can give no information under the subhead of 'Linguistic'.
The names of the townlands in the area are all of course Irish e.g. Carrowkeel, Dunmore, Drumatrumman, Gortnatraw, Gortcally, Octore, Gortnavern.
