  1. In the spring time the girls have great fun out in the fields. They spend a great part of their time stringing daisies and many other wild flowers. They make dolls out of cloth and old rags.
The boys make guns out of elder branches and in olden times they made guns from the "boor-tree" and they were called boor-tree guns.
They also have great fun looking for birds' nests and snaring rabbits and hares. They have another game which they delight very much in and it is scaring people with turnips. They cut a slice off a turnip. Then they cut out the shape of two eyes, a nose and a mouth.
At Christmas the children get a branch of holly with berries on it. Then they get a turnip and stick the branch of holly in it.
