- We have a plunge or upright churn at home. It is a little wider at the bottom that it is at the top but it is narrow in the middle. My mother makes the churning and we help her.If a stranger comes in when the churning is on he has to take a while of the churn, as it is an old belief that if he does not he is liable to have the butter if he wishes.The length it takes to churn depends on the cream as some cream is harder churned than others.In summer cold mater is put on to keep the cream cool and in winter hot water is put on to make it easier churned.When the churning is made(continues on next page)
