  1. In former times people used to make slim bread from wheaten meal, bread soda, and salt wet with butter milk.
    Leaven bread was wet with butter milk. A crock with leaven would be kept from time to time. It was left in the crock covered with a clean cloth and put on a stool, beside the fire or on the hob. When it rose up it was fit to make cakes
