  1. Little is remembered of the famine except that people travelled on foot to Donegal over the hills for a few stones of Indian Meal. Often they returned empty handed and suffered untold hardships on the way. The potato fields were re-dug for the scaidíns or small potatoes ordinarily not bothered about.
Cows were bled and people sustained life on the blood of starving animals they could not afford to kill because their milk was needed.
De-population in the district is shown by the following statistics.
Townland. No. of Homesteads. No. of Homesteads at present.
    Cloughboy 27 17
    Burkestown 13 7
    Liskeraghan 12 11
    Kilcashel 7 2
    Longfield 5 1
    Loughhill 6 4
    Shanaghan 12 10
    Crumlin 12 7
    Ballyganny 3 3
