- In a little village in the Rosses there lived a landlord who was pressing his tenants to pay unjust rents. The tenants feeling that they had had a grievance decided to pay no rents until their grievances had been remedied. This so enraged the landlord that he threatened wholesale evictions in order, if possible, to frighten his tenants into submission. But all his efforts were in vain.
Among the tenants was a boy who dealt with the correspondence, and replied to all communications from the landlord. It happened that the landlord met this boy one day and pressed him to tell where the tenants of the Rosses had their stored, promising him 60 pouns sterling, of a reward, if he would so. The boy said that it would be hard to betray his countrymen, but on second consideration decided to do so for the proffered reward.
He made arrangements with the landlord to attend at the house of the former on a certain day having first of all told him that they kept their wealth concealed in a(continues on next page)- Collector
