  1. The following account of hedgeschools was told to me by Hugh Melley, 70 years, Tullycleave, Ardara, whose father was taught by McKnight a hedgeschool master in this district.
The last hedge school master here was a Mr. McKnight who belonged to the Maas district. Maas is on the road between Ardara and Dunloe. It is about 5 miles from Ardara. There are relatives of this McKnight yet in the district. He was a very good teacher and taught nearly all the scholars in the Maas and Dawros divisions of the Glenties Union.
There was a particularly sheltered spot called "Crockastolar" near Summy hill where all the scholars congregated during the summer and dry season. Then in the wet and wintry season school was held at the homes of the scholars. He generally remained a week and gave notice where school was to be for the following week. He gave his services free. He was given in return board and lodging and sometimes he received presents from the parents of the children.
