“Long ago there lived in a place called Townawilly a man named James Boyle.”
William Mc Nelis Kentucky Ardara Co. Donegal aged 101 years told this story to Mary A McNelis. William heard the story from Patrick Kennedy his neighbour when he was a boy 90 years ago. Patrick Kennedy lived in Ballymickillduff Clooney where William was reared.Long ago there lived in a place called Townawilly a man named James Boyle (Townawilly is near Donegal town). He had a child of five years. One very wet night when the people of the house were sitting round the fire the child went out. He was not missed for a half hour - then the parents thought he was in some neighbour's house. They looked everywhere but he wasn't to be found.
Near the house was a river which had overflowed its banks that night owing to the heavy rain. They concluded that the child was drowned. However they travelled for three miles up one side of the river and then crossed to the opposite side and travelled back.
Very near home but on the opposite bank they found him sitting on a little heather ban and though it was raining heavily he was as dry and warm as if he were in his own bed.
