Thomas's foot to throw him out of the saddle, in order to get home first and get the bottle.
Thomas recovered his seat on the saddle and as he passed down the road a bit further he gave the horse the whip, put his toe under William's foot and threw him clean out.
Away he then went as fast as he could and as he was passing Hugh Boyd, he threw out water and tried to stop the horse until the other man would get up to him. He sped over ditches and "braes" and gained the bottle, with his partner behind him.
