  1. A form of travelling shop existed in this district as far back as sixty or seventy years ago. At that time there were no local or country shops in the district so two women came from the town (which is about three or four miles distant) with creels carrying various wares such as tobacco, soap, snuff, needles, tea and sugar in very small quantities and other such wares.
They sold these wares at the price at which they were sold at the town but they gave “short weight.” Thus when they bought a pound weight of tobacco in the town, for retail purposes this pound was divided into eighteen portions and sold as an ounce.
These women came around on certain days of the week and were locally called the “shopkeepers.”
