  1. Once upon a time there lived a man named Cathal. One day the Queen who lived in a palace near him told him if he would perform seven tasks that he would get a prize. The first task the Queen set Cathal was to build a castle in the middle of a lake which lay near the palace. The prince, who was at all events no coward, immediately set to work and gathered stones as fast as he could, he began to throw them into the lake to make a causeway or road out to the middle. He was hard at work when the magician's daughter arrived with the dinner. So he sat down and ate his dinner and while he was doing so, the girl, who was even a greater magician than her father, had the castle built, all complete. Binding the prince to close secrecy, she returned home with the dinner things. The Queen, grimly surprised at the castle, set the second task the next day, of finding her
