  1. Rush lights
    Long ago before candles were made the men and women of the houses (the m) used to get long thick rushes and peel the skin off them
    Then they used to dip them into boiling suet and hang them up to harden.
    One was used each night.
    When it was burned out, this was the sign that it was bedtime.
