- At the southern end of the town-land of Baile Mac Robartaigh stands a hill called Baile na Dearg over which runs the old road leading from Donegal to Ballyshannon.Local tradition points to this hill and its immediate vicinity as the scene of much bloodshed and murder. Here is was we are told that an innocent man was hanged – being accused of the minor offense of stealing a heifer. In this spot too a gambler, overcome by vice murdered his wife and mysteriously succeeded in crushing her dead body into a drain pipe of only 10” square.This two-fold crime had a third to crown it. It is said that a pedlar on his daily round of duty was seized upon by a tramp and foully done to death.(continues on next page)
