  1. In the time of the trouble in Ireland long ago when many a fellows life was cut short by raison of the martial laws that wouldn’t let you move out of the house, or lift the latch or draw a bowl from the evening, till the morning agen my (stoo) story happened.
    ‘Twas after nightfall, we wor [sic] sitting round the fire, the praties were boiling and the noggins of buttermilk were just ready for our suppers when a knock came to the doore ; “Whist” says my father “here’s the (sogers) sojers, Im afreed they seen a glimmer of light through the doore ” says he “no” says my mother for Im after hanging an ould sach agin a while ago. “Whist” says my father theres it again. “Go Shamus” says he, and see who’s in it, but dont open the doore for your life, barrin they brake it in, except for the sojers and spake them fair if its them.
    So with that I went to the doore. Who’s there? says I. A friend says he. Who are you at all?” Im Paddy the
