  1. The last hedge school in this locality was in the townland of Meencarrick [?] or Rathneeny Barr, about ten years before the present school in Laghey Barr was built
    The people of the district built a house and thatched it for a school.
    The teacher was a man named Mc Fadden he had only one arm and was called by the people Fisty [?] Mc Fadden.
    He was a native of county Tyrone and was supposed to have be[en] an ex-soldier, but he gave very little information about his past life.
    He seemed to be pretty well educated and was certainly a good teacher as far as the circumstances allowed though very stern and cross.
    He went around the neighbour-hood with the children staying night about in each house on turn.
    Each child paid him one shilling per quarter
