In old times the houses were made of sods and clay.

    (continued from previous page)
no such things as beds. There were benches in every house and they used to sleep on them. There was a hole in the roof of every house for the smoke to get out on. There was a clay floor in them. There were no windows on some of the houses in olden times. Heather was the thatch they used to put on the roof and sometimes sods when they had no heather. Long ago, there were no lamps or candles. They had no light only spales of fir. When the women were spinning, they had no light but fir also.
