  1. An Amusing Story

    In the year 1798 there lived in Pettigo an old shoemaker call M'Ateer...

    In the year 1794 there lived in Pettigo an old shoemaker called M'Ateer, who had a family of three sons and three daughters.
    The eldest of the girls was very plain, but the other two sisters were pretty, and they could get all the boys, but the eldest could get none atall.
    The old shoemaker said that he would not have his family "brocked".
    The second sister was proposed to by her boy, and the proposal was accepted.
    On the wedding day the old shoemaker made the bridegroom drunk, and instead of putting the girl he asked to marry him, he put the ugly sister next to the bridegroom, so the Minister knew no difference and he married the two of them.
    The next morning the groom got up, and everywhere he went so did the ugly sister.
    At last he turned to her
