  1. Once upon a time there lived an old woman all by herself in a little house on the side of the road.
She was a very religious woman. Every night before she went to bed she swept the hearth and left up a can of clean spring water for the fairies to enjoy themselves during the dark hours of night.
Every morning when she arose she threw the can of water out and this morning to her great surprize [sic] she threw out a can of gold which the fairies had left her for her kindness towards them.
