  1. The Abbey Well, which is situated a short distance from Assaroe cemetery has, from the time of Saint Patrick, been a place of pilgrimage. In the late years, on Lady Day - the 15th August - thousands of people assemble there to hear Holy Mass and make a Station at the hallowed spot.

  2. Away from the town and its babbling noise,
    Where the winds croon softly in valley and dell.
    Down by the shore and the silvery bay,
    Watching wavelets dance round the Holy Well.

    I meekly join the reverent throng,
    Kneeling on shingle and broken shell.
    Telling the beads, as Patrick did,
    Whose Saintly hands bless'd the Abbey Well.

    A Priest stands now, at an Altar, rude,
    With Chalice rais'd, as a tinkling bell
