  1. Long ago before bonfire night the children used gather all sorts of fuel and leave it in a heap somewhere till bonfire night. When that night came they set fire to the heap and when the fire was going out they would drive the cattle through it. They would carry the ashes to all the crops in the neighborhood and shake some ashes through them. It used to bring good luck on the crops.
