- (continued from previous page)ear-splitting and could be heard for miles around all night long they kept up the 'Kittling' as it was called. Night after night the performance was renewed until either side abandoned the struggle. Sometimes in desperation the bridegroom submitted to the Rule of Custom, but often as not, he stuck it out until the young fellows grew tired of the Kittling.I have not been able to trace the origin of the word - "Kittling"The First Visit of a Bride to the home of her people:-No bride ever visited her parent's home until one month after her marriage. This custom was rigidly observed and any infringement of it was not regarded as lucky.
- Early marriages in the case of men were, in the Broomfield district rather rare, at least down to within recent years. The average age for men lay between 40 and 50.
Reasons:-
Emigration for half a century was a heavy drain on the population of the district. Families were large, commonly reaching nine or ten. They emigrated in strict rotation(continues on next page) - Collector
